Geocell over Geomembrane on Pond Slopes: Stop Cover Soil Sliding

How geocell stops cover soil sliding on geomembrane in irrigation ponds, canals and reservoirs: layer design, anchoring, infill and common mistakes.

HDPE geomembrane holds water, but its surface is slippery. The soil or gravel cover laid over the liner to protect it from sunlight, animals and maintenance machinery soon slides down steep slopes. Geocell solves this: it holds the cover layer cell by cell and keeps it in place on the slope without puncturing the liner.

Why does the cover layer slide?

Friction between a smooth HDPE liner and soil is low. As the slope gets steeper than 1:3, rain and changing water levels cause the whole cover layer to slide downslope, leaving the liner exposed to UV and mechanical damage. Textured geomembrane increases friction, but on its own it is not enough on steep slopes.

The geocell solution: layer sequence

  1. Geomembrane: laid on the slope and buried in an anchor trench at the crest.
  2. Protective geotextile: protects the liner from gravel and point loads; essential with angular infill.
  3. Geocell: expanded from the crest downwards. No stakes are driven through the liner; the panel is tied at the crest to a concrete beam, the anchor trench, or rope/strap tendons.
  4. Infill: the cells are filled from the bottom upwards with soil or rounded gravel and levelled with a slight overfill.

You can see an example of this application on our pond and canal page.

Which geocell?

  • Cell height: 10–15 cm is enough on most pond slopes; 15–20 cm on very steep or long slopes.
  • Wall type: textured and perforated; the infill grips the cell better and water drains between cells.
  • Weld spacing: 356 or 445 mm is standard for gravel infill.

4 common mistakes

  1. Staking the geocell through the liner: the geomembrane is punctured and leaks begin.
  2. Skipping the protective geotextile: angular gravel scores the liner over time.
  3. Placing infill from the top down: the panels slide and the cells deform.
  4. Weak crest anchorage: the entire slope load is carried by the crest connection.

Geomembrane and geocell from one manufacturer

Geoser has manufactured HDPE geomembrane since 1978 and produces geocell in the same factory. Sourcing the liner, geotextile and geocell from a single supplier in one shipment reduces both compatibility issues and freight costs. Geocell questions

Can geocell be staked on top of a geomembrane?

No. Stakes puncture the liner. The geocell is tied at the crest of the slope to an anchor trench, a concrete beam or tendons.

What cell height should be used on a pond slope?

10–15 cm is enough on most pond slopes. On very steep or long slopes, 15–20 cm is preferred.

Is geotextile needed between geocell and geomembrane?

Yes, especially with gravel infill. A protective geotextile guards the liner against puncture and abrasion.

Where geocell works

One honeycomb panel confines soil, aggregate or concrete so the infill behaves like a rigid, load-spreading mattress.
